2023 Prague, Czechia: The goulash in Prague tastes as good as it looks, and you absolutely must try it when you visit because it is celebrated as traditional fare. It is nothing like the goulash I grew up with in the Midwest. Those memories involve thick concoctions of meat and pasta in a heavy tomato sauce. There MIGHT have even been some ketchup involved!
In Prague, the word goulash means soup. And so, when ordering a potato goulash or a beef goulash expect a more delicate concoction.
Potato Goulash at Restaurant Nebozízek
The potato goulash we ordered at Restaurant Nebozízek consisted of diced potato and kielbasa bathed in a paprika-infused broth. We are talking about a LOT of paprika. Not a spicy Hungarian type. It tasted more like a delicately smoked paprika that makes you feel warm and comfortable.

Beef Goulash at Restaurace Mincovna
The beef goulash we ordered at Restaurace Mincovna reminded me of a French beef bourguignon, but strained of any vegetables, leaving behind a perfectly flavored sauce with bite-size slices of beef. It came with two substantial potato dumplings, served on the side, presented more like batons. They were delicious.

This is our first day in Prague, and based on what we have sampled so far with the potato goulash and beef goulash we are excited to learn and experience more.
Until next time… Dobrou chut’!
